American Crow!

kryptonkay continues to dominate the birdcam in terms of getting the best shots. This morning she got five photos of a bird I’m calling an American Crow. Here’s my favorite:

She says in the comments on a couple of the photos that the bird is actually a Northwestern Crow, and between her vote and that of tom kellie in beijing, who chimed in on her side, a couple of the photos were briefly ID’d as such. But I’m pretty sure we’re actually looking at an American Crow. According to the Breeding Bird Survey, a Northwestern Crow would be a really unusual bird to see there.

Based on one of the images, I’d almost believe it was a Common Raven:

But looking carefully through all of them, I’m fairly confident we’re talking American Crow.

In any event, a new bird for the birdcam, and awesome pics (again) by kryptonkay! Congratulations!

I actually said it was an American Crow on the first ID but the picture looked so differant that I changed it to Northwestern Crow. I went to a few websites and they said they thought the Northwestern crow was a subspecies of the American Crow . They look alot alike but the Northwestern crows are smaller. Anyway I was excited to see him at the water dish and happy to catch a new bird on my list.

Heh. Since I wasn’t there for the photography, the only fun I got to have was arguing over the ID. So I actually appreciate your willingness to generate a little controversy. 🙂

But seriously, you’ve been taking really awesome shots lately. Thank you for the time and effort you’re obviously putting into it. One of the things I’ve been pestering the site’s operators to do is to institute some kind of scoring system where we could vote on our favorite pictures, and people would get points for having taken photos selected as favorites. If they ever do that, I predict you’re going to consistently be sitting at the top of the leaderboard.

    Thanks again.

Thanks elanus for the nice comments. I learn about birds everyday on your site and I agree that would be fun to get points for our favorite bird shots. Then I can pass up Kiddo and stay in the top ten list. I love birds and with your help and our other bird lovers we can have some fun. Have a Great Day!

Yeah. It *is* fun to argue over the IDs. Especially in those cases where it is really not even
clear what kind of bird it is. And I always find it interesting and informative what keys folks in to what bird it is. Other perspectives are always helpful to me.

Kryptonkay – your pictures really are awesome. I would vote your picts among the best, and would do so even if it put you ahead of me — which it would if we voted on the best picts.

Thanks Vireo , believe me I spend hours sitting and waiting for that perfect shot. My Mom feeds the birds in her yard and sometime I see a great shot in the birdbath and wished I brought my camera. She laughs at me. I do Love birds
